Boris forced to u-turn for the kids

MOUNTING pressure from Labour, teaching unions and Premiership footballer Marcus Rashford has forced Boris Johnson to U-turn this week over cutting school dinner vouchers during the school summer-holiday break. Last weekend the Tory government had made it clear that it was not going to extend the £15 per week coronavirus emergency voucher scheme for poor families over the summer.

Shock horror: millions of workers get low pay

MONDAY saw the release of a report by the Living Wage Foundation (LWF) and the New Economic Foundation (NEF) showing that over five million workers in Britain are employed in insecure and low-paid work, of which 1.3 million are key workers. These figures were compiled before the COVID-19 crisis which, the report said, will only make things worse. Northern Ireland had the highest proportion of low-paid, insecure workers at 19 per cent, with Scotland the lowest at 13 per cent.

Once upon a time Nicola Sturgeon said that schools were her top priority, she will be hoping that no opposition politician reminds her of that. Scottish schools have been closed for three months now. Plans are being laid for a partial reopening, but it is becoming increasing clear that both the handling of the closure and the escape routes are undeserving of a gold star..

Playing with fire in the Himalayas…

INDIA IS playing a dangerous game in the Himalayas. Indian attempts to encroach into Chinese territory were beaten back in a skirmish in which at least 20 Indian troops were killed and 120 more wounded this week.

In the past India followed the path of independence and established friendly relations with the Soviet Union and the people’s democracies in Asia and eastern Europe. Leaders such as Pandit Nehru and Indira Gandhi were pillars of the non-aligned movement. Now it’s led by Narendra Modi, the leader of the BJP, a front led by the secret Hindu nationalist RSS militia, a fascist bloc of high-castes, landlords and industrialists.

…and on the Korean peninsula

Democratic Korea dramatically countered recent south Korean provocations by blowing up the empty north–south liaison office in the border town of Kaesong this week. This dramatic piece of street art was clearly intended to send a message to the Seoul regime that has resorted to old Cold War tricks along the de-militarised zone that divides the Korean peninsula.
